The fruit
Tough, bumpy, round, or slightly oval-shaped skin and coloured in shades of red, lavender, dark purple, or yellow, it turns wrinkly when ripe. This exterior is in stark contrast to the interior, with its intensely aromatic yellow-green or yellow-orange edible seeds and pulp.
Fruity Facts
The prolific vine fruit [Passiflora edulis] is named for its exotic flower, imaginatively said to resemble the iconography (wounds, nails, crown of thorns, apostles) of the Crucifixion (Christ's 'Passion'). If you look at a Passionfruit, it looks like a handball that just had a serious workout on a gravel driveway. It is cultivated today in East and West Africa, Central and South America, New Zealand, New Guinea, Hawaii, Fiji, Australia, India and Indonesia.
