The fruit
Watermelons are huge round or oval fruits that can easily weigh up to 12kg. They have solid dark green or paler striped skins and vibrant pink/red flesh studded with large, flat black, edible seeds. It’s no coincidence that the word water appears in watermelon. The flesh has a high water content and in ancient times travellers used watermelons as a replacement for water.

Uses
Watermelons are generally cut into wedges and eaten on their own as a thirst-quencher. Cubes or balls also make an attractive addition to fruit salads. In some Mediterranean countries, the taste of watermelon is paired with the salty taste of feta cheese.
